Geylang condo NEWS: Tanjong Katong Complex will be closed for renovation from 2023.
SINGAPORE - The iconic Tanjong Katong Complex, a shopping mall in Geylang Serai frequented by local Malays with Geylang Condos, will close for major renovation works from the second half of 2023, as part of a plan to increase visitor numbers and transform the district.
The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said on Wednesday (Dec 8) that the roughly three-year renovation will introduce a rooftop area for restaurants and provide more space for community programs in the 37-year-old building.
But it added that the building's cultural and heritage value will remain, and that the new version of the complex will retain iconic elements of its design, such as the slanted columns. An SLA spokesman told The Straits Times that renovation work will begin in August 2023 and is expected to be completed by July 2026.
Geylang Condos close to the complex's 106 tenants, whose tenancy expires on December 31 of next year, will receive a six-month extension. SLA says this will allow them to benefit from more sales during the Hari Raya festival in April 2023 and give them more time to relocate.

It also encourages these tenants to find alternative locations, and says that those interested in looking at state property can participate in open tenders. The SLA added that it will work closely with these tenants to support their transition plans.
Built in 1984, the four-storey Tanjong Katong Complex is famous for its variety of shops catering to the Malay community here and many people go there to shop for Hari Raya or buy essentials for the family from Geylang Condos. celebrations like weddings. It also houses restaurants, textile shops, furniture stores and interior design firms.
"The Tanjong Katong complex has not undergone any major upgrades since it was built and its existing electromechanical systems are old and in urgent need of replacement," the SLA said.

"It's time for the 37-year-old building to be rejuvenated and revitalized to complement the new developments in the surrounding area."
A road in the updated version of the building that will link a new entrance will be built with other parts of the mall and additional spaces will also be created within the building. SLA said that when planning the upgrade, it incorporated feedback from the community, including recommendations to keep the building. Proposals also include refreshing the facade of the complex to complement newer developments in the vicinity by allowing more light into the building and increasing visibility in its interior.
Colin Low, chief executive officer of SLA, said the mall has a special and unique place in Singapore and this rejuvenated mall will add life to the area.
“The rejuvenated Tanjong Katong Complex will revitalize the area and transform the Geylang Serai area into a special cultural belt for the community and for all Singaporeans,” he said.
"Residents and communities can look forward to a rejuvenating development with more retail, food and beverage options and improved facilities and services."
The SLA said the plan to rejuvenate the Tanjong Katong Complex is part of a move to turn Geylang Serai, which stretches from the mall to the Kampong Ubi Community Center, into a special cultural belt. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during the 2018 National Day Rally that more can be done to make Geylang Serai a distinctive cultural area.
After consultation with the community, including current and former residents of Geylang Serai, ideas have been generated over the past two years regarding the creation of new and improved public infrastructure along the Geylang Serai district.
